HEALTH POLICY

Health Policy is a critical component of our organization.
This page will be continually updated with
up-to-date legislative issues that are of concern to AMSA members.

 Meet our LAD!

Jeff Shuster is serving as our 2008-2009 Legislative Affairs Director. He will focus on educating the Case premedical population on new and important health policy issues, ranging from insurance coverage to funding for health care workers. To contact Jeff about an issue of concern you may have or to see what you can do to help at a local level, e-mail him here.

Healthy Communities for Life.
With the hope of designing better communities that promote healthier living, Senator Obama (D-IL) has introduced the Healthy Places Act of 2006, which incorporates all levels of government in the challenge to address environmental health issues, not only in the doctor’s office, but also on the neighborhood sidewalk, on the school playground, at the worksite and on Main Street. The bill has four sections that collectively will help states and communities better address environmental health issues. For more information on this bill and to send a message to your senators urging their support, please click here.

Revise the Outdated FDA Blood Donation Policy
We feel that the lifetime deferral on blood donations from men who have had sex with other men is outdated, unnecessary, and discriminatory. Hundreds of thousands of otherwise eligible donors are turned away from helping save lives, especially in these times of critical blood donation shortages. We hereby pledge that we will fill the blood banks as we all donate blood the week this ban is lifted. For information on this policy and to sign the petition, please visit this website.

Make Medical School Affordable.
Please call your senators and representatives urging them to Support the Reauthorization and Improvement of the Higher Education Act. Please click here for information about the bill and what you can do to help.
